Beware of Craigslist!
My brother went on Craigslist to sell a surround sound system. A guy from out of state wanted to buy it. So, the guy sent him a check in the mail and told him a truck would come and pick it up. The day before the check arrived in the mail my brother got an e-mail from the guy asking him if he was an honest person. He then went on to tell my brother that he had confused two purchases and had sent my brother a check for $2300.00 instead of $200.00. He told my brother to cash the check when he got it and then keep his portion for the speakers and then an extra $100 to cover the trouble of having to go to the bank and post office. Then he told him to put the rest of the money into a travelers check and mail it to his accountant in another state. So, my brother did that. A few days later he checked his bank account and he was negative $2000.00. He called the bank and the bank said that the check he brought it was a fraud check and so they couldn't give him the $2000.00. But, my brother had already sent off the travelers check. And, he couldn't get that back, of course. And, the bank couldn't stop that because it was guaranteed money! How crazy, huh? He was totally scammed! All the money he and his fiance had in their savings account is on hold until they can see if they can catch the guys {which they don't think they can do}. So, My brother and his fiance are SOOOO sad. All the money they have been saving for their own wedding is going to be all gone! My poor brother has just been crying and crying. I feel so bad. So, I just wanted to give everyone a warning. BE CAREFUL ON CRAIGSLIST! Only accept paypal. Do NOT accept money grams, travelers checks, or personal checks from ANYONE....especially people from out of state! You don't want to be scammed!

oh my gosh!!! that is soooo sad!!! when is the wedding?
ReplyDeleteoh my gosh!!! that is soooo sad!!! when is the wedding?
ReplyDeleteOh man thats horrible!! I do a lot of stuff on craiglist and ive been approached with people like that but I heard a long time about about that scam so ive always been aware of it. Too bad your brother got caught in that horrible scam. I hope they find the people and they get their money back.
ReplyDeleteYeah, unfortunately, that is a pretty standard scam these days. Whenever someone is "out of state/country", wants to send me more money than I am asking for and/or wants to let me keep extra $$ for my "troubles" I just delete it and move on. Craigslist is good when you can deal with people locally and on a cash-only basis.
ReplyDeleteI hope that your brother can get the money back.....and if not, hopefully things will come together for the wedding.
PS-Shelly wants to read your blog...you should call her and get her email.
I found out about this type of scam when we were trying to sell our car a few years ago. I knew it was a scam--so I read the link on craigslist where it has scam information and it was dead on. Then a couple of weeks ago my brother was selling a watch and got the same email...."I'll send you $100 more than asking price for your troubles...blah blah blah." Lucky for him he forwarded the email to me and I told him it was totally a scam. He was so excited and didn't want to believe me but luckily he did. I'll tell him what happened to Rusty and maybe he'll be more aware of the emails he receives.
ReplyDeleteThat's too bad for Rusty and his fiance. Hopefully they can catch the thief. That's too bad.
thats sad. thatss why when we do business on craiglist or ebay we only accept and pay with paypal and cash. hope all works out for them.
ReplyDeleteI've been contacted many times with this type and others. I also don't let people come to my house. We meet them somewhere else usually. Dont' want crazy people knowing where you live and what stuff you have. Sorry for Rusty. If I can help him with the food for his wedding let me know. I'd love to help him.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the congratulations Kaylea!! I am SOO sad for Rusty, that is so terrible...I really hope they can track the guy down...
